PP&L Montana, LLC, MT (1995-2005)

Cochrane HPP, two 30 MW Kaplan units

  • Performed Index Tests on two 30 MW Kaplan-turbines units.Prepared the testing program, arranged test equipment, supervised and performed the test, compiled all data, reduced in a comprehensive report.

  • Oversaw and documented disassembly of lightning struck generator and assisted in the reassembly after repair and supervised startup.

  • Maintenance Training for personnel and Inspection of units’ condition and performance. Recalibrated restoring cables back to on-cam operation.

Thompson Falls HPP, one 50 MW Kaplan unit

  • Annual inspections evaluating condition and performance. Recommended and assisted in needed corrective measures.
  • Was hired as the Owner’s Lead Startup Engineer, reviewing and coordinating the testing and startup program. Coordinated and witnessed the turbine manufacturer’s index test.

Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, Cosgrove Intake Power Plant, MA (2001-2005)

Performed Index and Vibration Tests on two 1,500 kW Kaplan units. Was contracted to perform before and after index testing for this upgrade project. Prepared the testing program, arranged test equipment, supervised and performed the test, compiled all data, reduced in a comprehensive report.

Contra Costa Water District, Concord, CA (1996-2004)

Multi-Purpose Pipeline TWP PS Project

Provided Factory and Site Acceptance quality control, testing and startup support to this clean water pump station with four 450 hp and two 700 hp pumps, including Surge Control, DCS, and SCADA.

Mallard Slough Pump Station

Provided plant installation quality control, testing and startup coordination support to this 2 x 800 hp raw water pump station including local PLC and SS radio SCADA control system.

Contra Costa Water District, SCADA Replacement Project

Provided Factory and Site Acceptance quality control, testing and startup support to this SCADA system upgrade, replacing remote and host equipment for this in service water distribution system.

Willow Pass Pump Station Project

Provided plant installation quality control, testing and startup coordination support to this 4 x 250 hp clean water booster pump station including local PLC and SS radio SCADA control system.

Bollman 75 MGD Water Treatment Plant Safety and Water Quality Project

Provided plant installation quality control, testing and startup coordination support to this chemical systems upgrade, new ozone generating facility and ABB Bailey Distributed Control System project.

Los Vaqueros Water Conveyance Project

As the Lead Startup Engineer coordinated the installation QC, testing and startup program for this 5 x 2,100 hp and 4 x 2,100 hp pump stations and 16 miles pipeline conveyance project, including three flow control and metering stations, reservoir dam intake and outlet structures. Oversaw overall project system SCADA commissioning, created the operating procedures and trained the operators.

Supervised and evaluated the performance testing of the pump stations using permanently installed acoustic flow meters for the five pumps station and temporary acoustic flow meter in conjunction with volumetric measurements for the four pumps station.

Provided reliability and safety analysis and reported findings with recommendations for improvements.

Hired as Startup Engineer for this equipment replacement, 1 x 263 kW and 1 x 350 kW, vertical semi-Kaplan units project, coordinating the startup activities for on-line commercial operation.

ALCOA, Yadkin, Inc., one 34 MW Francis-turbine, Narrows, North Carolina (1996)

Developed the Commissioning Plan and acted as the Test Leader/Coordinator for this rewind, runner replacement upgrade project. Performed generator loss measurements.

Twin Falls HPP, one 44 MW Kaplan-turbine

Responsible for the Startup Program Manual.

Swan Falls HPP, two 12.5 MW pit Kaplan-turbines

Startup Engineer responsible for procedures, scheduling, testing and startup, supervising the Contractors’ and Manufacturers’ representatives and the Owner’s personnel. Compiled and evaluated results and composed the Startup Report and the Project O & M Manual. Responsible for the index test program, supervision, data compilation, evaluation and reporting.

Milner HPP, one 800 kW minimum flow propeller-turbine, eight radius spill and control gates, one 12.5 MW and one 45 MW vertical Kaplan-turbine

Responsible for the startup procedures, scheduling, testing and startup, supervising the Contractors’ and Manufacturers’ representatives and the Owner’s personnel. Compiled and evaluated results and composed the Startup Report and the Project O & M Manual. Responsible for the index and performance test procedures, supervision, data reduction, result calculations, evaluation and reporting. The initial performance test results showed deficiency so the test was repeated after improvements were made by the turbine supplier.

Was hired back to former Power Company to assist with:

New 200 RTU SCADA system

Responsible for design and startup of RTU/PLC units for control of hydropower plants and substations.

Forshult HPP, one 15 MW Kaplan-turbine

Chief Startup Manager in charge of scheduling, testing and startup, supervising the Contractors’ and manufacturers’ representatives and the Owner’s engineers and operators. Responsible for supervision of the index and performance testing, data reduction, result calculations and evaluation. Generator losses were measured with the calorimetric method. Deficiency in the turbine performance prompted concrete removal in the draft tube ceiling area where form work had deflected during placement.

Krakerud HPP, two 11.5 MW vertical Kaplan-turbines

Procedures and supervision of commissioning. Responsible for supervision of the index and performance testing, data reduction, result calculations and evaluation. Generator losses were measured with the calorimetric method. Deficiency in the turbine performance prompted modification to the runner hub and cone angle.
 Review and compilation of O & M documents.

Lucky Peak Power Plant Project, 100 MW Kaplan-turbines HPP, Idaho
(1986-1989)

  • Performed an Automation Impact Assessment Study.
  • Coordination and oversight of vibration, bearing clearances, generator stator/rotor roundness and air gap measurements and unit balancing at the one year post runaway speed test control.
  • Chief Startup Engineer in charge of installation inspection, testing and commissioning of this hydropower project. Responsible for supervision of the index and performance testing, data reduction, result calculations and evaluation. Generator losses were measured with the calorimetric method. The tests were performed on one unit using a permanently installed acoustic flow meter.
